Saltwater pools use dissolved salt (3,000-6,000 ppm) as a store for the chlorination system. The chlorinator uses electrolysis to break down the salt (NaCl) and release the chlorine into the water. As such, a saltwater pool is not actually chlorine-free; it simply utilizes a chlorine generator instead of direct addition of chlorine. When chlorine levels are low in the pool, one possible cause is low salt (others can be higher-than-normal chlorine demand, low stabiliser or mechanical issues with the generator itself.) Salt count can be lowered due to splash out, backwashing, and dilution via rainwater.

Yes – you should bear in mind the pH scale is not uniform.
pH 8.0 is 10 times more alkaline than pH 7.0.
pH 9.0 is 100 times more alkaline than pH 7.0.
So the rule here is simple - what may appear to be a small difference is in fact significant. If in doubt employ a pool specialist to keep your pool pH properly regulated.

Regulating swimming pool pH is one of the most important aspects of swimming pool care. Low pH can lead to skin irritation and corrosion of pool equipment. High pH can result in cloudy water and contribute to scale formation. More importantly, high pH will reduce the effectiveness of the sanitiser as it releases less free active chlorine.
